From touring the Taj Mahal to dining inside an 18th-century sugar mill and visiting a chocolate plantation, these three couples had far-from-ordinary honeymoons. Planning for your honeymoon isn’t always easy, though (especially when it involves international travel and currency exchanges!), but with the help of American Express Travel Insiders these couples were able to travel stress-free. Because, let’s face it, once all the wedding planning is over, the only thing you’ll want to do on your honeymoon is relax and be married!

Marnie & Aram David’s Honeymoon To India and Sri Lanka

3 Dream Honeymoon Itineraries

What They Wanted: “We wanted to do something that was kind of different. A once-in-a-lifetime kind of thing,” said Marnie, a Brooklyn resident who married husband Aram in 2012. They choose India because they thought the culture would be interesting. Plus they love Indian food!

The Itinerary: Marnie and Aram spent two days in India, where they visited the Taj Mahal and shopped in the adjacent city of Agra. “Satya Srikonda [a Travel Insider from Shanthi Travel, Inc.] went above and beyond. Once we got to India he had tour guides that he got for us and drivers to take us everywhere,” says Marnie. After India, the couple then traveled to the southwest coast of Sri Lanka where they hit the beach, ate Sri Lankan cuisine, and visited the wildlife preserves where they saw elephants and sea turtles!

The Best Part? Watching musicians in Agra, near the Taj Mahal.”The musicians played this whole song and dance for us with the sitar and all different Indian instruments, and they let Aram play the sitar,” Marnie says. “He got up on stage with them…We recorded the whole thing. It was really beautiful.”

Carolyn & John Tate’s Honeymoon to Nevis, West Indies in the Caribbean

3 Dream Honeymoon Itineraries

What They Wanted: An amazing destination wedding followed by a romantic honeymoon in a location that was both romantic and convenient for family and friends.

The Itinerary: The wedding festivities started with a welcome reception on the Ocean Terrace at the Four Seasons. The next morning the couple took in the sights on a guided island tour. The night before the wedding, everyone was transported off property to Montpelier Plantation (an old sugar mill) for dinner. After the wedding, the two stayed for one more day.

Where They Stayed: The Four Seasons Resort in Nevis, West Indies. Bonus: Their American Express Travel Insider, Rena Harris of Azumano Travel, also helped get them discounts on restaurants in the area. In addition to making the travel and hotel arrangements, she also helped the couple score $450 per night in resort credits. “I would not have found that. She started digging around….she was the mastermind,” says Carolyn.

The Best Part? To bring their honeymoon to a close, the couple and their guests took a sunset and snorkel sail. “There were eleven of us total and that was just a great day,” says Carolyn.

Emma & Chris Plowman’s Honeymoon To La Romana, Dominican Republic

3 Dream Honeymoon Itineraries

What They Wanted: An affordable location with the perfect mix of activities for a small family destination wedding followed by a laid-back honeymoon. “We were trying to find a place to have a destination [and honeymoon] wedding that was somewhat affordable for our family and was still really nice,” said Emma of Dana Point, California.

The Itinerary: Before the wedding the couple went zip-lining. After saying their “I dos” the couple spent five more days in the Dominican Republic enjoying their honeymoon. Also, because the two are chocolatiers, they visited a cocoa plantation where they got to see the entire process from tree to farm to bean!

Where They Stayed: Dreams La Romana Resort & Spa in Dominican Republic. They used American Express Travel Insider Rena Harris of Azumano Travel to put together all of the travel details – from the room packages to scheduling flights for friends and family.

The Best Part? “Swimming up to the poolside bar, relaxing at the spa, and walking on the adjacent beach,” Emma says.
