In matters of Netflix, as in life, when one door closes, another one opens. So, even though April’s end means Netflix will lose a few solid films, it also means new movies will be available come May 1. Here are five sweet, funny, romantic and just plain classic flicks to look forward to as May rolls around—just in time to get you in the mood for your spring or summer wedding. Enjoy!
1. Great Expectations (1998)
Oh, what a saga! Ethan Hawke and Gwyneth Paltrow star in this contemporary adaptation of Charles Dickens’s classic novel. Poor boy meets rich girl; a kiss in the garden; angst, misunderstanding and unrequited affections—it’s all part of the game of love.
2. My Last Day Without You (2011)
If you haven’t heard of this one, it’s because it’s a quiet indie feature, starring Nicole Beharie (from Fox’s Sleepy Hollow series) and German actor Ken Duken. When Duken’s character, a German businessman, comes to Brooklyn, New York, for a one-day work trip, he starts falling for the beautiful woman who introduces him to the city.
3. Just Friends (2005)
If you don’t love Ryan Reynolds already, this hilarious rom-com should help swing you in the right direction. Follow his character, from overweight high school sweety with a big, fat, unrequited crush on his best friend (played by Amy Smart) to hot-shot record executive, and watch what happens when their paths cross again as adults.
4. To Catch a Thief (1955)
This seamless romantic thriller from director Alfred Hitchcock has everything you want in a classic film noir. Cary Grant plays an ex-jewel thief in the French Riviera trying to clear his newly innocent name from some recent gem robberies—but more importantly, if you haven’t seen Grace Kelly’s unbelievable wardrobe, you’re in for a serious treat (we can’t decide between the ice-blue Grecian chiffon or the gold off-shoulder ball gown!).
5. Sixteen Candles (1984)

Molly Ringwald plays Sam Baker, 15 going on 16, but her teen milestone birthday gets eclipsed by her older sister’s wedding the next day. Add the fact that her hottie senior crush just intercepted the most embarrassing note from Sam to her best friend and that a total geek’s on the prowl for Sam’s heart (read: panties)—this is sure to be one unforgettable, forgettable birthday. It’s the perfect movie for your fix of feel-good, prewedding nostalgia.
