Anxious About Sharing a Wedding Date With Meghan Markle and Prince Harry?

The moment Clarence House officially announced the engagement of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry on November 27, 2017, the entire planet has seemingly—and incessantly—fawned over their upcoming nuptials. And understandably so: Royal weddings nearly always attract international attention and scrutiny. Kensington Palace proceeded to confirm the couple’s wedding would take place the following spring—on Saturday, May 19, 2018, to be exact.

And if you’re a fellow May 19 bride who felt a sense of dread that your wedding date was now “taken” by the royal couple, shuddering at the idea that your special day would be overshadowed by the event, we’re here to tell you that it’ll all be okay. (Even if you’re convinced all eyes will be on what dress the future duchess will wear.) Here’s what to do if you’re feeling anxious about getting married on May 19 at a venue other than Windsor Castle.

Don’t Sweat It

There will always be large-scale events—good or bad—that happen to coincide with weddings. Whether it’s a sporting event (like the Olympics, March Madness or a boxing fight) or a splashy news story, you certainly wouldn’t be the first person to feel like someone or something more important is stealing your spotlight. But that can’t (and shouldn’t) take away from your happiness on your wedding day. And of course, keep in mind you likely have a leg up—London is at least four hours ahead of any US location, so there’s a chance it’ll be over before yours even begins.

Change Your Thinking

Instead of asking “why me?” remember that your guests are there to celebrate you. More likely than not, hundreds of people are traveling far and wide to watch you tie the knot with the love of your life. A televised event won’t change that, and while you’re enjoying what will probably be one of the happiest days of your life, a wedding between two strangers will be the last thing on anyone’s mind.

Lean Into It

Why not embrace it a little bit? Turn on the TV while you’re getting ready with your bridesmaids. Put a cheeky “We picked this day first, for the record” on your programs, save-the-dates or wedding invitations. Serve clotted cream or crumpets as a nod to the other couple across the pond. You can acknowledge the overlap without letting it take away from your day.
