When you picture your honeymoon, you more than likely visualize walking hand-in-hand with your new spouse along a deserted beach (or European lake, or Grecian shore, or snowy bluff, or what have you). Now imagine that your mom is there. And your partner’s zany uncle. And your bridesmaids and groomsmen, too. How do you feel?
For some couples, their response is “sign me up!” The New York Times has reported that “buddymoons,” a honeymoon attended by one or more of the couple’s friends and family, are a growing trend. Why invite the whole gang to come to Maui? Because more couples are living together, going on vacation alone isn’t as big of a deal — while a blowout trip with some loved ones (who have conveniently gathered for your wedding anyway) feels more like a celebration.
Plus, buddymoonin’ celebs like Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz and Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton have made the idea seem more appealing to regular folks, the Times reports. We were curious about how real couples felt about this “trend,” so we posted a poll on our Facebook page. We asked, “Would you go on a buddymoon (taking friends and family along on your honeymoon)? And the results were decisive: 240 of our fans voted “No way! I want it to be just me and my new spouse!” while just 22 people chose “Yes, I love the idea of spending more time with loved ones!”
