Do my flowers have to match my wedding colors?
A:
Nope! In fact, some of our favorite wedding looks included a diverse palette that works without being too matchy-matchy. There are a few things to keep in mind to avoid total color chaos. “Your wedding is telling a visual story, so you don’t want things to clash or feel out of context,” says Jes Gordon, Creative Director and Owner of Proper Fun in New York City. The key is to find a common thread that will hold it all together. Even the most colorful venues have something that makes everything feel cohesive.
Try picking a neutral color to accent your more prominent hues—this will keep things feeling like they go together. Metallics, cream, black and a light tan are versatile compliments that can be used throughout your stationery, cake and decor.
If you’ve decided on a blue as one of your wedding colors, you may run into some flower trouble—there aren’t many stems that are naturally blue. Focus on other elements to incorporate the color, and don’t be afraid to play a little bit too. “Remember that color is also enhanced by texture and different hues of that color. You can make blue express itself in many different ways, starting with the lightest shade to the deepest shade of navy,” says Gordon.
