Whether you want your beloved Frenchie to have your wedding rings attached to her collar, your maid of honor to hold your sassy tabby as an honorary bridesmaid, or even your childhood horse to carry you into your ceremony, it doesn’t stop once you’ve made it down the aisle. With all your months of planning every detail down to the cocktail napkins, ring boxes and menu fonts, there still may be some crucial points you’re missing.
Figure Out the Logistics
Before you’ve even gotten your furry friend down the aisle, you have to figure out how they’re getting there and when. Will they travel to the venue with you or a designated point person later in the day? You may want them with you from the very beginning, but you should weigh your options. Don’t forget you’ll be getting ready with your squad (read: lots of delicate, fur-free dresses), which means eating, drinking and taking photos with a group of people. Depending on how excitable your pet gets, this may not be the right environment for them. Don’t worry, no matter when you choose to have them brought to your venue, they’ll still be overjoyed to see their favorite person (don’t tell your partner).
Who Will Walk (or Carry) Them Down the Aisle?
You need to make sure whomever you choose is up for the task. This is particularly important in the case of small children, like your sweet nephew acting as ring bearer, as they’re less likely to have the strength to hold back any enthusiastic pups. Speaking of, if your fur baby gets a little skittish around a big group of people or overly thrilled by all the new friends, you may need to go to your backup plan, which may be just ditching the whole idea altogether.
Plot a Postceremony Plan
Once their main role is complete, it’s time to figure out where your pet is going. Do you want them to join the party or would you prefer they’re shuttled home with a few extra treats? Figure this out well in advance, so, if needed, you can ask either your previously designated person to ensure they get back safely, or find some additional help. Don’t forget, if you have a planner, they can help you with all these decisions.
Have Treats Ready
If you choose to have your pet stay for the fun, don’t forget about their gourmet dinner. When packing for your wedding, throw in a bowl and some food for your fuzzy love. (You can still sneak them some of your meal at the reception—we won’t tell.). Throughout the day, make sure they’re getting their normal meals and plenty of water, especially if it’s toasty outside. The last thing you want to risk is your precious pet overheating or getting dehydrated during your vineyard affair.
Make Sure They’re Stylin’
Finally, think about outfits, whether that’s a floral wreath, a mini bow tie or bedazzled leash. You’ll likely want your pet to fit in with your theme—but it’s important to make sure they’re comfortable first. And don’t forget to add some photos of your pet to your photographer’s shot list so you can cherish the memories of snuggling up with your fur baby on one of the best days of your life.
