For many, Elon Musk is the face of futuristic ambition — the billionaire genius behind Tesla, SpaceX, and the race to Mars. But behind the headlines and high-tech ventures lies a story far more personal, and far more painful, than most could imagine.
In a rare and emotional interview, Musk opened up about his difficult childhood growing up in South Africa, shedding light on the trauma, bullying, and emotional hardship that shaped the man he would become.
“I was a lonely kid,” Musk said candidly. “I didn’t have many friends. I was the smallest in my class, and I got bullied pretty badly. It wasn’t just teasing — it was physical. I ended up in the hospital a few times.”
He described the torment he experienced at school as relentless, with classmates targeting him for being different, bookish, and obsessed with computers. The bullying was so severe that at one point, Musk was thrown down a flight of stairs and beaten unconscious.
But perhaps even more impactful was the emotional strain at home. Musk’s relationship with his father, Errol Musk, was turbulent and deeply complicated. While he rarely speaks about his family in detail, in this interview, he admitted the relationship left deep emotional scars.
“My dad was a very difficult man. He could be brilliant, yes, but also cruel,” Musk explained. “It was a toxic environment. There were a lot of mind games, a lot of manipulation. As a kid, it was hard to separate love from control.”
Despite the challenges, Musk says those painful early experiences helped fuel his resilience. “When you’re used to standing alone, it makes you unafraid of doing things differently. I think that’s why I’ve always been willing to take risks — I learned early that the world isn’t always kind, but you can’t let that stop you.”
