Everything Grooms Should Know About Customizing a Suit

No matter what he’s wearing, your groom will look all sorts of handsome on your wedding day—he’s about to marry the love of his life, after all. But, he still needs a suit (or tux) worthy of the momentous occasion. While some guys would rather rent and some prefer to purchase, it all depends on his budget and just how personal he wants to go. If your groom-to-be is on the hunt for a piece he’ll wear again and again—one that feels 100 percent him and fits to a T—a custom suit could fit the bill. Men’s Wearhouse makes the process easy, affordable and most importantly, entirely about him. Below, we break down how it works and what you should know.

It’s accessible.

Grooms don’t have to spend a lot of money (or effort) to get a suit or tux that’s tailor-made for them. Every Men’s Wearhouse store offers this custom service, with wardrobe consultants on-hand to guide your guy through the process from start to finish. Plus, starting prices range from $395 for the Joe by Joseph Abboud line to $795 for the Joseph Abboud line, which uses higher-end fabric options and is made in America.

Pro tip: Think of this as a wardrobe investment (and one you should maximize). Choose a color and style that could work for future events, like a classic navy suit or black tux along with accessories he can mix and match. Just think: Every time he wears that wedding jacket, you’ll fall in love all over again.

The process doesn’t take as long as you’d think.

Concerned about timing? Don’t be. From the first appointment to the final fitting, getting a custom suit takes about three to four weeks. It can even be done in just two appointments, which leaves your guy more time to write those vows or plan your honeymoon. At the first appointment, he’ll chat with a wardrobe consultant about what he’s looking for, get measured and pick out fabrics and other custom features (we’ll get to those). Two to three weeks later, the suit will arrive at the store for a fitting. And since it’ll be made to his exact measurements, only minor alterations—if any—will be necessary.

Pro tip: It may only take a few weeks, but he shouldn’t wait until the last minute. We suggest getting the groom’s look squared away 6-8 months out from your wedding day.

It redefines personalization.

Now more than ever, couples are looking for new ways to make their wedding stand out. Fashion is a fun and easy way to achieve that wow-factor. “Guys want individuality and customization,” Joseph Abboud, chief creative director of Men’s Wearhouse, says. “Using your imagination and guidance with the consultants, there are lot of beautiful things you can do.” The fabric selection goes beyond standard wool and can give his look the right seasonal touch (think: a cashmere or velvet jacket for a fall wedding, or linen suit for summer). From there, he can select jacket linings, pick the lapel style, choose a stitching style, add functional buttons to the sleeves and even monogram his name or your wedding date—a super sweet way to memorialize the day. He can also have a custom shirt made to complete the ensemble.

Pro tip: Think about how to differentiate his look from the rest of his party. “[The groom] should stand apart from the groomsmen by at least one element. If the groomsmen are all wearing two-piece tuxedos, maybe he wears a three-piece black tux with a gray vest,” Abboud says.

He’ll get a perfect fit.

Fit is king when it comes to his suit or tux: Pants that are too long or a jacket that’s too tight can instantly take a look from stylish to sloppy. Plus, it’s not just about the size of the garment, but the cut. Silhouette has an impact on how the pants and jacket will actually sit on the body, so it’s important to think about his body shape. Men’s Wearhouse offers five silhouettes: modern, slim, extreme slim, classic and executive. When he’s measured for a custom look, the consultant can help him determine which fit may be the most flattering.

Pro tip: Keep in mind that other jacket features can also affect his appearance. For example, a two-button style can visually lengthen the torso and highlight his shoulders.

His wardrobe consultant will be your new BFF.

Even if you two don’t particularly enjoy shopping, there’s something to be said for getting one-on-one time with a personal style consultant. Hello, #shoppinggoals. They’re by your side every step of the way to offer professional advice on fit, silhouette, color and fabric. Regardless of whether you both have a clear picture of exactly what you want or you’re starting from scratch, the wardrobe consultant will help guide your decisions, not dictate them. “It really does depend on the individual. Some come with swatches, some need guidance. We’re always having these conversations and the more dialogue, the better for the customer,” Abboud says.

Pro tip: There’s no need to come in to the appointment with an exact look in mind, but we recommend thinking about your wedding colors and how formal (or casual) the event will be as a starting point.

He doesn’t have to go full-on custom to make the look feel personal.

Don’t have the time or budget to go totally custom? There are still plenty of ways to make a rental or off-the-rack suit feel special. In this case, it’s all about getting the suit or tux tailored to his body (Men’s Wearhouse offers this service in store, so you don’t have to make an additional trip) and picking accessories that match his personal style or your wedding colors. Cuff links, ties and socks are all easy and affordable ways to add personality to a suit.

Pro tip: The something-borrowed tradition isn’t just for brides. Ask his family (or yours!) for a piece they wore for their own wedding or an heirloom your guy can wear.
