George Foreman: Boxing Legend Dies at 76

George Foreman, the heavyweight boxing legend and iconic figure of the sport’s greatest comeback, passed away on March 21, 2025, at the age of 76.

Childhood and Career Beginnings
Born on January 10, 1949, in Marshall, Texas, George Foreman had a difficult and challenging childhood. He had trouble with the law before joining the Job Corps Program, where he discovered his passion and talent for boxing. Foreman’s boxing career began to flourish when he won a gold medal at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics in the heavyweight division, marking an important turning point in his life.

Notable Achievements in Boxing Career
After his success at the Olympics, Foreman turned professional and quickly asserted his position. In 1973, he won the world heavyweight championship by defeating Joe Frazier, who had been unbeaten with 29 wins. This fight is famous for Foreman knocking Frazier down six times in just two rounds, demonstrating his superior power.

However, one of the most memorable fights of Foreman’s career was his confrontation with Muhammad Ali in 1974, known as the “Rumble in the Jungle”. Although he was the favorite, Foreman was defeated by Ali’s clever tactics. After this and several other defeats, he announced his retirement in 1977.

A Spectacular Comeback and Business Success
In 1987, after a decade away from the ring, Foreman made a surprise return to boxing at the age of 38. This comeback was initially met with skepticism, but he proved his worth with an impressive winning streak. The culmination of this comeback came in 1994, when he defeated Michael Moorer to regain the heavyweight title at the age of 45, becoming the oldest heavyweight champion in boxing history.
