Lake Tahoe Honeymoon: Weather and Travel Guide

No matter what time of year you go, Lake Tahoe offers plenty to do whether it’s hot or cold outside. Nestled in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, this area boasts breathtaking panoramic views of the freshwater lake and surrounding peaks from almost every resort and restaurant. Not to mention a plethora of outdoor activities to suit any skill level.

Before You Go: Need-to-know info

Language: English
Flight time (to Reno): 7 1/2 hours from New York City; 1 1/2 hours from LA; then a 45-minute drive to Lake Tahoe
Getting around: Cars, trains, taxis and local shuttles

When to Go: Lake Tahoe at its best

Best weather: It’s sunny 75 percent of the year.
Best prices: Fall and spring

What to Do:

Summer: Without the snow hindering your travels, you’re free to explore Lake Tahoe on foot, by bike or by boat. Dozens of hiking trails and bike paths lead to outstanding views of the nation’s largest alpine lake and surrounding peaks, while canoes and kayaks are up for grabs if you want to get close to the water. There are also plenty of beaches if you are just looking to peacefully lounge around instead, plus plenty of verdant golf courses to practice your strokes.

Winter: Home to the 1960 Winter Olympics, Squaw Valley and other Tahoe regions put their best peaks forward come winter, when six alpine ski resorts become a snow lover’s dream. Lake Tahoe is home to some of the best alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and snowshoeing in the country. When you want to take a break from the slopes, you can shop for athletic equipment, souvenirs, apparel, jewelry, and more.

Casinos: On the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe, you’ll find five 24-hour casinos — some attached to resorts, others freestanding — that are outfitted with fine-dining restaurants, spa facilities, live music venues, and, of course, lots of tables and slot machines that will test your luck.
