After hockey player Matt Lombardi proposed to five-time Olympic medalist Nastia Liukin (with a gorgeous ring he designed himself), the gymnast gave us a peek into the planning of their New England nuptials.
We ruled out our hometowns for possible wedding locations.
“As soon as we got engaged, Matt and I decided we didn’t want to get married in our hometowns of Dallas and Boston. When we started exploring, we both fell in love with Newport, Rhode Island. The charm and character of the city truly sealed the deal.”
Making our guest list might be the hardest thing about planning.
“We’ve become friends with so many people throughout my gymnastics career and Matt’s hockey career. I’m an only child and have no cousins, so Matt’s list is a little longer— must be the Italian family! We wish we could invite everyone, but drawing a line is a must, which will be hard.”
I can’t wait to have new sisters.
“Growing up as the only child, I’m so excited to have two sisters, Lisa and Michelle.”
Reem Acra will be designing my wedding dress.
“I’ve had a vision of my wedding dress for so long, but when I finally started trying on gowns, it did alter a bit. I finally fell in love with a dress, but I wanted to change and add a few things. I’m so thrilled Reem Acra saw my vision clearly and will be helping to create my dream dress.”
I’m not Pinterest obsessed.
“But I definitely have a secret wedding board that I add things to occasionally. I’m excited about the decorations and colors…”

We opted not to hire a wedding planner, thanks to our venue.
“We’re lucky we picked a venue that has just about everything in house, minus the flowers, band and photographer. So we’ll work closely with that team to make our dream day a reality.”
