Budget: $4,000
Time of Year: May
Length of Trip: 11 days
Travel Time: 3 hours from Los Angeles
In search of a honeymoon getaway that required very little travel time, Katrina and Paul headed south from their home in Playa del Rey, California, to the coastal city of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. “We were exhausted postwedding and wanted to quickly get to paradise,” Katrina says of the three-hour trip. But while most travelers equate Mexico’s
sandy beaches with plenty of rest and relaxation, the newlyweds set out to make their honeymoon as adventurous as possible, complete with zip-lining and rock climbing. “We went on three different outdoor excursions with Vallarta Adventures and they were all incredible in every way,” Katrina says. “Just remember to bring sneakers. Paul only packed
flip-flops, so we had to buy new shoes.” The first adventure included snorkeling and hiking in the nearby town of Yelapa, while the second involved a trip to the Sierra Madre Mountains for cliff rappelling, zip-lining and riding down two towering waterslides. For their last
hotel-led excursion, the newlyweds took a boat to Las Caletas beach, where they enjoyed an open bar on the ferry before sitting down to a candlelit dinner and tribal dance performance in the sand. “That was definitely the best part
of our trip,” Katrina says of the evening, dubbed Rhythms of
the Night by their hotel. “We were surrounded by candles and torches on the beach. It was an extremely romantic and surreal experience.”
