Budget: $5,000
Time of Year: September
Length of Trip: 9 days
Travel Time: 8 hours from Boston
In search of a less touristy escape overseas, Kate and Rob traveled to Sicily’s tucked-away beach town of Taormina for a nine-day retreat. The pair spent the duration of their vacation
at La Plage Resort, where perks included access to a private bungalow, secluded beach and outdoor Jacuzzi. “We wanted to spend a good amount of time in and near the ocean, so we were happy to find a hotel that was situated directly on the water,” Kate says. When they weren’t soaking up the Mediterranean sun, Kate and Rob explored
the nearby island of Isola Bella along with the adjacent town of Mazzaro and Corso Umberto—
a central avenue that runs through Taormina. “The street is filled with restaurants, bars, shops and ancient ruins,” Kate says. “So it’s safe to say we accomplished our goal of eating our way through the city.” The couple even booked a half-day retreat to Mt. Etna—an active volcano located close to the city of Catania—where they tasted wine at the base of the mountain. “We splurged on food and expensive wine but have zero regrets,” Kate says. “In fact,
we still talk about a particular slice of lasagna that we had for dinner.” Buon appetito!
