Real Honeymoons: Spring 2014

Tiffany & Mario: Buenos Aires & Cancun

Tiffany and Mario love two types of travel—they enjoy both exploring new cultures and lounging on a beach. For their honeymoon, they started with a place neither of them had been, Argentina, before making their way to Cancun for some relaxation (and piña coladas). Want their honeymoon?

  • Budget: $9,000
  • Time of year: late December to early January
  • Length of trip: 12 days
  • Travel time: 10 hours to Buenos Aires

Where to Stay: In Buenos Aires, the couple checked into Hotel Pulitzer, where they loved the roof deck bar and its delicious wines. Taking advantage of their central location, they crammed in as much sightseeing as possible before jetting off to Cancun for five nights in the luxurious honeymoon suite at Sun Palace.

While You’re There: The couple took tango lessons and danced until the wee hours of the morning and filled up on steak, malbec and dulce de leche granizado—Buenos Aires specialties. In Cancun, they lounged on the beach, swam with dolphins, indulged in a couple’s massage, rented a car for a day trip to Playa del Carmen and rang in the new year.

Follow Their Advice: Find a milonga (a local dance party) while you’re in Buenos Aires. “I’ve never seen people dance and party like that!” Tiffany says. “It was such a treat.” And for Cancun? “Splurge for a room with a view.”

Lindsay & Kevin: Arizona

Saving their big Euro-trip for their one-year anniversary, Atlanta–based couple Lindsay and Kevin planned a mini-moon within the continental US. From a Jeep tour of the Grand Canyon to a horseback ride through the desert, they had a truly Southwest experience. Want their honeymoon?

  • Budget: $4,800
  • Time of year: mid-November
  • Length of trip: 7 days
  • Travel time: about 6 hours from Atlanta

Where To Stay: Highlights of the couple’s stay at L’Auberge de Sedona in Sedona were the private outdoor shower connected to their room and feeding the ducks every morning along the banks of Oak Creek. For the second leg of their adventure, they spent three nights at The Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain—a desert oasis in Marana.

While You’re There: They hit the road in Sedona, enjoying the scenic views from Highway 89A through Oak Creek Canyon, stopping in Jerome to explore the old ghost town. They made a pit stop at the Grand Canyon for a tour with Pink Jeep Tours. In Marana, they took advantage of their hotel’s luxury spa and group excursions like horseback riding.

Follow Their Advice: Make sure you pack sunscreen. Although it was chilly in November, Lindsay still got a sunburn. “Don’t underestimate that Arizona sun!” she says.

Clara & Matthew: Eastern Europe

Looking to balance their time between lying on the beach and fresh cultural experiences, Clara and Matthew planned a globe-trotting honeymoon adventure with stops in Prague, Vienna and exotic Montenegro. Want their honeymoon?

  • Budget: $10,000
  • Time of year: mid-June
  • Length of trip: 12 Days
  • Travel time: 11 hours from Dallas

Where To Stay: Their journey began with a two-night stay at Eurostars Thalia Hotel in Prague before hopping a train to Austria, where they spent a night in Vienna. From there, they flew to Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro, and explored the country by car (with a stop at a private beach in Sveti Stefan) before heading back to Prague for their flight to the States.

While You’re There: The couple went on a beer tour with Prague Beer Tours in the Czech capital. In Montenegro, they rented a car and took the scenic route from Podgorica to Lake Skadar then to Sveti Stefan and the Bay of Kotor—spontaneously pulling over along the way to explore abandoned buildings and photograph the scenery.

Follow Their Advice: Clara recommends renting a car in Montenegro. “It’s the best way to see such a small country,’ she says.
