Wedding Vendors: Paying a Wedding Soloist?

Q:

If you ask an acquaintance from your church to sing a solo during the wedding, is it expected that he will be paid? If so, how do you determine the amount? When I asked him if he would do me the honor, he never mentioned being paid. Now I don’t want to insult him by offering payment. Would a gift certificate to a nice restaurant along with a wedding thank-you note be acceptable?

A:

Your solution sounds like a great idea, and it’ll help to avoid an awkward “payment” conversation! This man is probably not expecting anything of you — he’ll be pleasantly surprised with your gift, which is a gracious and thoughtful gesture.
